Chevrolet has made an announcement to manufacture an all-electric version of the Spark EV Chevrolet Spark mini-car. It plans to sell the car in a few select U.S. and global markets beginning in 2013.

According to the global vehicle chief engineer at Chevrolet, Jim Federico, the new vehicle from Chevrolet offers buyers residing in urban areas with short commutes and predictable driving patterns, a very good all-electric option. Chevrolet’s range of electrified vehicles seems to be growing at a regular pace. 2013 Malibu Eco and Volt extended-range EV are just a few examples powered by eAssist technology.

Chevrolet plans to offer its customers a wide assortment of electrification solutions so as to cater to the transportation and lifestyle needs of people all over the world. EV Chevrolet is just one step further in this direction. The highly developed nanophosphate lithium-ion battery packs that energize the Spark EV are supplied by A123 Systems.

Chevrolet is a giant global automotive brand with annual sales crossing 4 million vehicles in about 150 countries. Known for providing consumers with fuel-efficient and high quality vehicles with expressive design, spirited, EV Chevrolet will provide an insight into the needs of electric vehicle customers living in cities.

Details on its specifications, quantities, pricing and markets will be made known later. Rumors have it that the new electric car would be small and specifically designed for urban areas. Working on an all-electric Spark is no surprise. Earlier this year, in India, a version of the vehicle known as the Bea was exhibited. With oil reserves shrinking world wide, it seems the future will belong to Electric cars.
